Eine neue Ära für Ethereum: Was ist der „Merge“?

Bereits seit geraumer Zeit hält er die Krypto-Welt in Atem, nun ist er Realität geworden: Der „Merge“ – ein wesentliches Update des zweitgrößten Krypto-Assets Ethereum, das heute nach langer Wartezeit stattgefunden hat. Da dieses Update nicht nur für Krypto-Nerds, sondern für die gesamte Blockchain-Branche Wegweiser ist, lohnt sich ein genauerer Blick: Was genau ist der Merge und was ist mit Ethereum passiert?
Nach Bitcoin ist Ether (ETH) mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von rund 200 Milliarden Euro die weltweit zweitgrößte Kryptowährung und gehört zur Ethereum-Blockchain, die technische Grundlage für zahlreiche Anwendungen und Projekte aus dem Bereich der dezentralen Finanzdienstleistungen (DeFi). Wie auch beim Bitcoin war Proof of Work bis heute die treibende Kraft hinter Ethereum – ein sogenanntes Konsensverfahren, bei dem einzelne Personen – die Miner – mit ihren Rechnern komplexe Aufgaben lösen, um Transaktionen auf der Blockchain zu überprüfen und dafür mit Coins (Einheiten einer Kryptowährung) entlohnt zu werden. Dieser Mechanismus macht Kryptowährungen sicher und schafft Dezentralität – denn Transaktionen wurden damit nicht durch eine zentrale Autorität, sondern die Gesamtheit viele Teilnehmer validiert. Doch Proof of Work ist zugleich enorm energieintensiv.

99,95 Prozent weniger Stromverbrauch

Proof of Stake (PoS) ändert das: Das Konsensverfahren ist eine Alternative zu Proof of Work und setzt auf das sogenannte Staking, vergleichbar mit dem Hinterlegen von Geld und dem Erhalt von Zinsen auf einem traditionellen Bankkonto. Ethereum-Nutzer staken ihre eigenen Coins, und werden somit Teil des Validierungsprozess der Transaktionen. Da kein Lösen komplexer Rechenaufgaben mit Hochleistungs-Hardware mehr nötig ist, verbraucht PoS weitaus weniger Energie – rund 95,95 Prozent weniger – und macht das zugrundeliegende Asset Ether zudem zu einem Asset, der Anlegern durch Staking Renditen in Form einer ewigen Anleihe gewährt. Ethereum ist nicht das erste Blockchain-Projekt, das auf Proof of Stake setzt – wohl aber das größte und bedeutendste. Der Wechsel wurde lange vorbereitet, unter anderem durch die Schaffung einer eigenen PoS-Blockchain – der Beacon Chain. Nun wurden das Ethereum-Mainnet – die eigentliche Blockchain von Ethereum – und die Beacon-Chain miteinander verschmolzen – daher der Name „Merge“.

Warum ist der Merge bedeutend?

Das Ethereum-Netzwerk wird durch den Wechsel auf POS nicht nur effizienter, sondern schafft die Grundlage für weitere, wichtige Updates, die Ethereum langfristig auch deutlich schneller und billiger machen sollen und somit den Weg zu einer Blockchain der Zukunft ebnen. Das ist vor allem für Ethereum wichtig, da das Netzwerk als technische Basis für tausende Anwendungen im Bereich der dezentralen Finanzen – von Darlehen bis Währungstauschdiensten – dient. Das Upgrade des weltweit zweitgrößten Kryptoassets ist ein richtungsweisender Schritt hin zu einer nachhaltigen, schnellen und effizienten Krypto-Infrastruktur.
